Statement of Candidacy

Previous administrative posts at the University of Louisville and positions in professional organizations (President, Semiotic Society of America; President, American Association of Teachers of Italian; Chief Reader, AP® Italian) provide me with practical experience in the matters related to the Office of President Elect of the AATSP.

Prior service as a member of the AATSP Executive Council during the 2003-2005 period is relevant. That experience provided me with knowledge about the diversity of AATSP including its vital academic constituencies (elementary, middle school, high school, community college, college and university), and its language constituencies (Spanish and Portuguese). AATSP membership interests are also wide-ranging: Cinema, culture, linguistics, literature, and pedagogy. The person who serves as President Elect of the AATSP must promote the requirements and responsibilities of this diversity.

If elected, I plan to:

  • Maintain AATSP as the premiere academic organization for Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian languages and cultures;
  • Promote vigorously the study and teaching of the Hispanic and Portuguese languages and cultures;
  • Increase AATSP membership;
  • Enhance fund raising activities;
  • Support award programs;
  • Continue positive relationships with local AATSP chapters;
  • Expand member participation in the annual meeting;
  • Advance the National Spanish Exam and the National Portuguese Exam;
  • Promote the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica.

My intention is to represent all members of our organization by promoting the needs of each constituency. My interest in second-language pedagogy would serve AATSP well since most members of our organization are involved in teaching at all levels.
