Statement of Candidacy

Hello. My name is Debbie Gill and I am Associate Professor of Spanish at The Pennsylvania State University, DuBois campus. I have a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Southern California, with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics and pedagogy. I have published, presented papers and conducted workshops on the use of technology for language acquisition as well as the use of authentic assessments to assess language proficiency and cultural knowledge. Teaching Spanish language and culture is a passion of mine and providing an avenue for students to become global citizens is a main goal. If elected to the Executive Committee, one of my goals as a college and university representative for the AATSP will be to continue to work to help students become more aware of cultural differences and build a more global perspective. A second goal will be to continue to promote second language proficiency, cultural awareness, and outcomes assessments in these areas through networking and collaboration not only amongst University faculty but rather a connection amongst K-16 educators. As I have also served on numerous tasks forces related to internationalization of undergraduate students and study abroad, have organized and led study abroad programs, have served as the Coordinator of the National Spanish Exam, and have created a web portal of materials for K-16 educators, I bring a number of different experiences to help build the connections and networks between K-16 educators.
