Thursday, October 27, 2016
The application for the 2017 Boren Awards is now open at www.borenawards.org! The application for the 2017 Boren Scholarships (for undergraduates) and Boren Fellowships (for graduate students) are open now, with applications due on February 9 and January 31, 2017 respectively.
Boren Awards fund U.S. undergraduate and graduate language study and research abroad in world regions critical to U.S. national interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East).
There are two aspects of the Boren Awards that we would like to bring to the attention of teachers and students of Spanish and Portuguese:
1.) For study in Latin America:
Boren Awards will give preference to applicants planning to study in the Latin & South Americancountries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. There is also a stronger preference for study of the Portuguese or Haitianlanguages, for which there is no minimum proficiency requirement. Preference is also given to students who are willing to study abroad for longer periods of time, and those who are highly motivated to work in the federal government following graduation.
2.) For Portuguese study in Africa:
The African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) offers Boren Awards applicants the special opportunity to study Portuguese by participating in domestic and overseas language programs in Mozambique. Created in partnership with experienced program providers, this program tailored to help students at all levels of Portuguese achieve intermediate to advanced language proficiency and launch careers in international affairs.
The official Boren Awards AFLI program is administered by American Councils for International Education, while also receiving instruction in basic Portuguese, with two components:
1. A summer domestic program at the University of Florida
2. A fall overseas program at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique
The Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for undergraduate students for language-focused study abroad.
The Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for graduate students to fund language study, graduate-level research, and academic internships abroad.
Additional information on AFLI program requirements, program locations, and a complete list of preferred languages can be found on our website. Webinars on aspects of the Boren Awards, including special regional initiatives and components of the application are scheduled throughout the 2016-2017 academic year.
