Search for Editor of Albricias

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is seeking an Editor for Albricias, the official journal of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH).  Albricias is published biannually in print and digital form; the issues appear in March and in November of each year. The journal content centers on prose, poetry, and graphics submitted by student members of the SHH.


Since the journal maintains a virtual office, the majority of the work can be completed online and in any location with a reliable Internet connection. The position offers flexible hours and carries a three-year contract beginning January 1, 2017 and ending December 31, 2019 with a possibility for renewal. The Editor of Albricias is a part-time, contracted position with compensation in the form of an honorarium. The selected candidate for the position will need to be available in November-December 2016 for training for the position. The Editor of Albricias works with the Albricias Editorial Board, the Director of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the Albricias designer, the AATSP Director of Communications, and the AATSP Executive Director in order to establish policies and procedures for the journal. The Editor of Albricias reports to the Executive Director of the AATSP and will be reviewed annually.


All applications will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates who meet all of the following qualifications:

  • Experience with the editorial processes and procedures of a journal
  •  Basic knowledge of and experience with graphic design and text layout
  •  Experience with the production of a journal and a digital publication process
  •  Experience with on-line submission and tracking of manuscripts
  •  Experience with copy-editing and proofing
  •  Experience with standard style manuals
  •  Experience with and proficiency in common computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  •  B.A., preferably in a field related to Spanish
  •  Proficiency in English and Spanish
  •  Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team


The Editor of Albricias is responsible for the publication and the general management of the journal. The basic tasks are outlined below. 

Publication of the Journal

  • Establish guidelines for the submission of all materials to the journal. Update the guidelines as necessary. 
  • Work with the Albricias designer and the printing company to establish submission and publication deadlines. Publicize the deadlines to potential authors. Adhere to deadlines so that the journal is published according to the announced schedule.
  • Process all submissions for review and publication.
  •  Verify through the YourMembership database that each student author has been inducted into the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica.
  •  Review the submissions and select the materials to be published with input from the Editorial Board and other reviewers.  
  • Copy-edit all materials to be published including front matter, back matter and all text and images.
  • Obtain release forms and contracts for each item to be published.
  • Correspond with authors and teacher-sponsors to get their approval on edited work and finalize queries and missing information before it is sent to the designer.
  • Supervise and coordinate the correction of proofreading comments from all sources including the authors, the proofreader(s), the SHH Director, and the AATSP National Office. After coordinating the proofreading comments, check corrections and finalize content that will be sent to the designer.
  • Determine the order of the content for each issue.
  • Submit all content to the designer and work with that individual to determine the layout and design for each issue. Materials must be submitted with appropriate lead time to meet the final publication deadline.
  • Submit final content to the printer.
  • Prepare mailing list for distribution of journal.

Management of the Journal

  • Work with the Director of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the AATSP Director of Financial Services, and the AATSP Executive Director to establish an annual budget for Albricias which will need approval by the AATSP Board of Directors.  
  • Monitor Albricias expenses in order to adhere to the approved budget.
  • Provide payment information for the National Office so that student contributors receive their honoraria for their published materials.
  • Promote Albricias as necessary in order to increase submissions and readership.
  • Create and oversee Albricias information published on the AATSP website, in brochures, in social media, and other publications.
  • Attend the annual conference of the AATSP in order to report to the Board of Directors, promote the journal, and solicit articles. Present a session sponsored by the SHH/SHA to promote Albricias and explain submission guidelines.
  • Provide the AATSP Board of Directors with an annual written report describing the work accomplished, outlining budget information, and providing data on the number of manuscripts received, manuscripts published, and acceptance rates as well as outlining goals for the near future.


  • The finalists for the position will be interviewed by the Search Committee via a conference call.
