Learn research-based strategies and
develop practical tools for academic literacy instruction to use in
Spanish in bilingual, immerson, and dual language education programs.
Please join us for this three-day Spanish Literacy Institute
designed to provide participants with an understanding of effective
methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to
students in Grades K-8 at all levels of proficiency.
Featured presenters, Dr. Margarita Calderón, Dr. María N. Trejo,
and Ms. Guadalupe Espino of Margarita Calderón and Associates, will
share proven strategies and practical tools for providing instruction in
Spanish.
CAL presenters, Dr. Julie Sugarman and Dr. Beatriz Arias, will
outline how to develop effective bilingual immersion and dual language
education programs and curricula to support the work of teachers who
deliver instruction in Spanish.
The Spanish Literacy Institute is designed for bilingual teachers,
specialists, and coordinators who provide support or instruction in the
Spanish language in bilingual, heritage language, language immersion,
or dual language settings.
Participants must be proficient in Spanish and have a working
knowledge of English to fully participate in all aspects of the
Institute.
What you will learn and receive
- Instructional strategies to effectively teach vocabulary,
reading, writing, and academic content in Spanish to students in Grades
K-8 at all proficiency levels, beginning through advanced.
- Sample expository and narrative texts in Spanish will be used
to model language production and reading comprehension, and to examine
writing, revising, and editing strategies.
- Throughout the Institute, presenters will discuss the
implementation of the Common Core State Standards in programs and
classes designed for bilingual learners.
- Presenters will describe research fundamentals, effective
program structures, and strategies to promote students' use of and
proficiency in Spanish.
- Each participant will receive an informative packet of materials for use during and after the institute.
