With new technology tools sprouting up every day, it can be overwhelming for the foreign language teacher to keep up! This workshop will give you the opportunity to explore technology tools and web-based authentic materials that foreign language teachers have used successfully to enhance language learning in their classrooms and will allow you to think about how to apply those technologies in your own instructional setting. We will begin by briefly discussing how to strategically incorporate technology tools into the classroom and then look at concrete examples of activities and lessons that use free webbased tools and authentic materials available on the internet. The example activities and lessons will demonstrate how technology can be used to engage learners in digital storytelling, collaborative writing, inquiry-based research on the web, real-time interactions, virtual simulations, and facilitate acquisition of oral and literacy skills, elicit different modes of communication, and help students increase their intercultural competence. We will also discuss where to find authentic materials on the web in the target language (video, audio, written texts) and ways to scaffold their use in class for any proficiency level. This workshop is targeted for K-16 foreign language instructors and will involve presentation, hands-on activities, and discussion.
