Vocabulary Teaching and Learning
June 9-10, 2014 - Monday, Tuesday - 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 
Presenters: Xiaofei Lu and Gabi Appel (Penn State)

About this workshop: Although not the only goal of language instruction, words are an indispensible aspect of the language development of a learner. In this workshop we will explore essential aspects of the nature of vocabulary, present important findings from vocabulary studies that help us understand how words are organized and learned, offer informed pedagogical suggestions for teaching vocabulary, and share usable activities and strategies to help students accelerate in learning words. Some of the specific questions we will address include: What does it mean to know a word? How many words does a learner need to know? Which words should I teach my students? What are some of the best ways to teach words? What types of technologies and technology-mediated activities can I use to teach words? What strategies can students use to learn new words? The two-day workshop will consist of small presentations accompanied by tasks and hands-on activities.

Discourse Analysis and the Teaching of L2 Writing 
June 11-12, 2014 - Wednesday, Thursday - 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 
Presenter: Susan Strauss (Penn State)

About this workshop: This workshop is designed for participants to more deeply understand the role of writing —as both communicative “skill” and vehicle for problem-solving and expression—in a second language context. Participants will learn about basic discourse analytic techniques to identify genres of writing, audience design, and authorial voice and stance.  Participants will use these concepts as mediating tools through which teachers and student writers engage with texts (as readers and writers). The workshop will also focus on: selecting level-appropriate readings and other materials, designing L2 writing tasks, responding to writing, and assessing writing. The workshop is for teachers of all L2s, but specific examples will be provided for ESL, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Korean. The workshop takes a dialogic, literacy-centered approach to reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Designing Projects for the Chinese Classroom

About this workshop: This one-day workshop is designed for teachers of Chinese. We will address: Learning outcome-oriented project design; Understanding and making use of multimodality for project design; Understanding learning styles and implication for project design; Backward design through explicit reference to learning outcomes and national standards. We will show sample materials, analyze learner products and design grading rubrics. 
Note: This workshop is limited to 24 participants

Recipients of a registration grant will not need to pay registration fees for this workshop. Google Apps for Teaching Chinese

About this workshop: This one-day workshop is designed for teachers of Chinese. It can be an enhancement for instructors who also participate in the “Designing Projects for the Chinese Classroom” workshop. We will address: Google input tools; Google translation; Google voice; Using Google forms for conducting student survey, placement tests, class polls, quiz and tests; Using Google drive for file sharing, collaborative writing, and feedback; Using Google calendar; Creating effective Google presentations; Creating animation and video; Incorporating Google apps using Google site for course site building. 
Note: This workshop is limited to 24 participants

Concept-based Language Instruction
June 16-17, 2014 - Monday, Tuesday - 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

About this workshop: The workshop presents an innovative approach to language instruction based on sociocultural theory and the principal that it is necessary to provide second language students with explicit knowledge of whatever language concept they need to learn. The more complex the concept, the more explicit instruction is required. This encompasses grammar, pragmatics and sociolinguistic knowledge, vocabulary and figurative language (metaphor and metonymy). The approach links explicit knowledge to concrete communicative (spoken and written) activities. Topics addressed include the following: concept as the unit of instruction, conceptual knowledge and advanced proficiency, conceptual knowledge and communicative activities, materials and activities for concept-based instruction. Examples will be presented from Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and English, but applicable to all languages.

Badges and Language e-Portfolios
June 18-19, 2014 - Wednesday, Thursday - 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Technology Room

About this workshop:In this workshop we will explore an innovative approach to assessing communicative and cultural proficiency using Badges and e-Portfolios. Together, these technologically dynamic tools represent a holistic record of interdisciplinary learning. We will discuss Lafayette College's LaFolio initiative and showcase samples of its Badge-winning student e-portfolios, the Badges awarded for achievement (i-Lingua, i-World, i-Think, i-Lead, i-Tech), their corresponding Badge assessment rubrics and respective benchmarks, as well as the technologies employed to construct, implement, and disseminate these learning materials. Small presentations and hands-on activities.
