DESCRIPTION

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in Science, Social Studies/History and Other Technical Subjects (or ELA CCSS; 2011) created by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the State Governors Association (SGA) were adopted by 44 states by 2011. The ELA CCSS were developed to establish a clear set of expectations for English language arts, along with a set of standards for content area literacy. The adoption of these standards by most of the states has far-reaching implications for the US Spanish as a World Language classroom, and will involve not only the K-12 teachers but also those who teach Spanish at colleges and universities.

Furthermore, the National Language Standards(ACTFL et al, 1995-2011) set language learning expectations in five areas – Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities – as well as three proficiency levels – Novice, Intermediate and Advanced (ACTFL, 1982-2012). There is a strong correspondence between the capacities of a college and career ready student and the Five Cs framework of the National Language Standards. Successful implementation of both sets of standards in the Spanish K-12 classroom depends on such an alignment.

The presenter will review the Common Core Standards, their relationship with the National Language Standards, and the implications and instructional shifts that teaching to this set of literacy standards may have for K-12 instruction, and the speculation that it might be as far-reaching as to impact Spanish instruction in colleges and universities. The participants will also receive information about the Common Core en español (2013), its intended purpose and audience; the Assessment Consortia formed to construct and administer Common Core-based state-wide assessments; and other Common Core-related paradigm shifts with implications for the Spanish classroom, such as the literary v. informational texts ratios that the Common Core documents apparently prescribe.

Finally, the presenter will share additional references to further learn more about the Common Core, the upcoming nationwide assessments based on Common Core, and other related resources.

Presenter: Mario A. Nuñez currently serves as the Director of Professional Development for Santillana USA, Inc. in Miami, Florida, where he is involved with the design, marketing, sales, and implementation of professional development courses for teachers, administrators, and parents. He has developed courses in the areas of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), heritage languages, Spanish as a second language, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Title III requirements for school districts and schools that serve LEPs, and LEP/ELL parental and school involvement. He also acts as a consultant for Santillana USA’s school division. Mario holds a MA in Modern Language Education from Florida International University and a BA in Mass Communication from New York University. He has been a Fulbright Scholar (1993) and a recipient of the Embassy of Spain’s Teacher Grant to study abroad (1990). He has been a presenter and a speaker in numerous state, national and international conferences and activities.
