The AATSP and Santillana USA are pleased to offer two unique 90-minute webinars 

January 23 and 24, 2012.


The AATSP and Santillana USA have partnered to make available two webinars:

  1. Webinar A: Saber leer: estrategias de lectura para el aula de español on Monday, January 23, 2012
  2. Webinar B: Hablando bien se entiende la gente: la enseñanza del léxico en el aula de español on Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Detailed descriptions for each webinar appear below.


Each webinar will be offered twice; once in the morning, once in the afternoon. Participants must choose a morning or afternoon session.

  • Morning (AM): 11:00am to 12:30pm Eastern Standard Time [10:00am-11:30am Central; 9:00am-10:30am Mountain; 8:00am-9:30am Pacific]
  • Afternoon (PM): 5:30pm-7:00pm Eastern Standard Time [4:30pm-6:00pm Central; 3:30pm-5:00pm Mountain; 2:30pm-4:00pm Pacific]

Saber leer: estrategias de lectura para el aula de español

Presenter: Mario A. Nuñez currently serves as the Director of Professional Development for Santillana USA, Inc. in Miami, Florida, where he is involved with the design, marketing, sales, and implementation of professional development courses for teachers, administrators, and parents. He has developed courses in the areas of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), heritage languages, Spanish as a second language, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Title III requirements for school districts and schools that serve LEPs, and LEP/ELL parental and school involvement. He also acts as a consultant for Santillana USA’s school division. Mario holds a MA in Modern Language Education from Florida International University and a BA in Mass Communication from New York University. He has been a Fulbright Scholar (1993) and a recipient of the Embassy of Spain’s Teacher Grant to study abroad (1990). He has been a presenter and a speaker in numerous state, national and international conferences and activities.

Description of Webinar Content: La adquisición de habilidades de lectura es vital para el desarrollo de la alfabetización en cualquier idioma. En esta sesión semostrarán estrategias para mejorar la lecturaantes, durante y después de la actividad lectora. Además se hablará de los enfoques en la instrucción que el maestro puede llevar a cabo en el aula con el propósito de desarrollar la habilidad lectora en el alumno. Los participantes aprenderán cómo utilizar adecuadamente una variedad de lecturas, buscando que sean siempre dealto interés y baja dificultad. También se ofrecerán ejemplos de literatura en español nivelada a diferentes grados de dificultad.

Description of Webinar Content: La lengua española es rica en variedad, complejidad y léxico. Por esto, nos debemos enfocar en enseñar registros de la lengua que sean cuidados y que ayuden al alumno a lograr sus propósitos comunicativos. Este taller revisará conceptos de la enseñanza del léxico que nos traen los más recientes análisis científicos, y, basándonos en estas investigaciones, sugeriremos algunas estrategias pedagógicas para la enseñanza del vocabulario. También se discutirá el libro "Hablando bien se entiende la gente”, editado por Gerardo Piña Rosales, Presidente de la Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española, et al., en el cual se nos presentan, de una forma divertida y lúdica, algunos de los mas comunes errores de uso del vocabulario, y como corregirlos.
