2011 Teachers of the Year

The AATSP Outstanding Teacher-of-the-Year Awards are given to teachers of Spanish or Portuguese representing the following four categories:

A. Elementary Level: Grades K-8

B. Secondary Level: Grades 9-12

C. Two-year College Level

D. College or University Level


This year awards will be given for the elementary, secondary, and university levels.


The 2011 AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Elementary Level

 Alicia Lewis

 The AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Elementary Level is Magali Alvarez, who teachers at Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School; Ozone Park, New York.

Her letters of nomination and recommendation were outstanding and include comments such as the following: "Magali’s dedication to students and parents/guardians is exemplary. Her attitude and character encourage our students to achieve the goals set before them. She is a great representative of the Hispanic culture.” Another colleague writes, "She is a most warm, concerned and dedicated professional. Her students are fortunate to experience her teaching. You couldn’t ask for a better candidate for your prestigious award.”

 


 


The 2011 AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Secondary Level

Mara-Lee BiermanThe AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award Secondary Level is Guía Santamaría Melo and she teachers at ‘Iolani School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Guía Melo received stellar letters of nomination from students, colleagues, and administrators. Her letters stress her dedication to students and to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Her Headmaster wrote, "Ms. Melo is an outstanding teacher who finds meaningful ways to engage and inspire students in the learning process. Her students embrace the dynamism and excitement that always exist in her classes. Her results are exemplary. And a student wrote, "Ms. Melo continually comes up with creative lessons and projects to spark interest and curiosity. As a result of her efforts, my classmates and I have produced newspapers, tourism brochures, newscast videos, PowerPoint presentations, magazines, and compositions, all written and/or spoken in Spanish; all were educationally effective and a lot of fun to create.

 


 






The AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award University Level

Teacher of the Year Award University Level is Michelle Geoffrion-Vinci from Lafayette College in Easton Pennsylvania.

The letters of nomination and support for Michelle Geoffrion-Vinci praise her teaching, service, and especially her role as a mentor to students. A current student writes, "She inspires, motivates, and challenges her students to think globally and to learn pluralistically. She is vivacious, always available to meet with students, and continually willing to review concepts with them.” Her department head stated: "Professor Geoffrion-Vinci is by all measures one of the most gifted and inspirational teachers and valued mentors I have ever known and observed in the classroom and beyond.” Her Provost concurs and states that Michelle has won two of the most prestigious teaching awards at Lafayette College, which is an institution that prides itself on excellent teaching.
